Do you ever wonder if you really need to trim the wick? All of us candle lovers have seen this on the candle packaging or burning instructions. Is it really neccessary? The simple answer is YES! If you want to acheive that perfect burn, and perfect melt pool throughout the life of your candle you must trim the wick before lighting each time.
What makes the big different? At Natuur Candles, we use only lead-free wicks. Many, almost most, of the large factory-made candles on today's market still use lead wicks - why? Because they are self-trimming and allow the consumer to have a fool-proof burn without needing to trim. So, why don't we just use lead wicks then? Well, it is very well documented that lead is not healthy for us, especially not when you burn it and then inhale it, do you really want to breath in all those toxin chemicals? No thank you!
Because we use cotton-core wicks, they need a little extra help making sure the wick is just the right size for burning each time. By trimming the wick, this redcues the "soot" that can build up on the glass edge, this reduces the flame to a safe and effective size and lengthens the life of your candle.
How to trim your wick - You want to always trim your wicks to 1/4 inch, or about 4-6mm. Use a sharp pair of scissors and always discard the wick trimmings before lighting. Upon opening up a new candle - and we all know how great that feels! - you do not need to pre-trim the wick before the first light, we have done that all for you.
So, go and trim those wicks before lighting your next candle, you will be glad you did!
